Phase III (clerkship phase)
Phase III is the clerkship phase which extends for two years (year 5 & 6 of AGU
curriculum). The central goal for this phase is to prepare the student to acquire the
knowledge, skills and attitude which will enable the students to provide efficient,
cost-effective, and humane patient care.
The program is designed so that the student should be able to acquire broad span
of knowledge in all the different clinical disciplines and these skills by end of this
phase: • General Professional Skills (History taking-Physical examination- Patient
management- Communication- Minor procedures- Information retrievalCritical appraisal and Evidence-based medicine).
• Professional Behavioral Skills: Patient interaction- Group interaction- Selfassessment (reflection) - Professional ethics. • Problem Solving Skills: students would be able to execute all of the following
steps of biomedical problem-solving (Problem-sensing, generating hypotheses,
self-directing learning ability, critical assessment of evidence, synthesis,
management, evaluation)
The students are exposed to clinical training at the clinical training sites around
the Kingdom of Bahrain under supervision of AGU faculty (full-timers and part –
timers). They also undergo supervised training at the Medical Skills and Simulation
Center (MSSC) at AGU campus during the different rotations where they get to
practice in safe environment important skills and procedures according to the MD
program curriculum.
They rotate in different clinical departments: • 10 weeks: Obstetrics &Gynecology • 10weeks: Pediatrics • 20 weeks: Internal Medicine • 6 weeks: Clinical Electives • 17 weeks: Surgery • 8 weeks: Family Medicine • 4 weeks: Psychiatry • 2 weeks: ENT medicine • 2 weeks: Ophthalmology.
